CHESS
Presented by Pierrot Productions
AUDITION INFORMATION:
Auditions will be held on Wednesday, July 28, and Thursday, July 29
Appointments ARE required and may be scheduled by sending an email to auditions@pierrotproductions.org.
– if you have any questions about the show itself, please email petelabriola@verizon.net
PREPARE:
Applicants are asked to present a song from any stage musical, a 1-3 minute monologue, and be prepared for basic movement.
ABOUT THE SHOW:
This October, CHESS will be playing at Mercer County College’s Kelsey Theatre, but it’s more than the kind played on a game board. Instead, this CHESS is the musical masterwork created by Tim Rice (SUPERSTAR, EVITA, AIDA, LION KING) and the composing duo of Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (Abba, MAMMA MIA).
Originally presented as a concept recording in 1985, the stage version opened in London in 1986, and it has reappeared numerous times in venues around the world since then.
The story uses the game of chess both literally and metaphorically, presenting it in three dimensions: the world championship match being played by the competitors, the political game waged by the CIA and KGB handlers of the American and Russian champions, and the personal relationships between the players and their women.
CAST INFORMATION:
CHESS will be performed by a cast of 15, all featured parts, requiring singers capable of meeting the show’s intense vocal demands:
Anatoly Sergievsky – the Russian champion – bari-tenor (to G#), 40s*
Freddy Trumper – the brash American champion – rock tenor (to C), 30s*
Florence Vassy – Hungarian-born companion and second for Freddy – belt (to E), late 20s-30s*
Svetlana Sergievsky – wife of Anatoly – belt mezzo, 30s-40*
*- it’s more important for these characters to match ages against each other than to any script requirement.
Walter deCourcey – Freddy’s CIA handler, supposed manager – bass-baritone (down to G#), 40s
Alexander Molokov – Anatoly’s KGB handler, supposed manager – bass (down to F#), 40s-50s
The Arbiter – Chess Federation representative serving as referee of the match – rock high baritone (up to A), 30s-40s
Eight (4 M, 4 F) combination characters, appearing as businesspeople of a Swiss town, Chess Federation officials, Russian and American agents, and others – all vocal ranges and adult ages; good ability to move well.

Saturdays 10/16 & 10/23 at 7:30
Sundays 10/17 & 10/24 at 2:00

ABOUT THE CAST
We are seeking a total of nine actors (five male, four female). All roles are open; specific role information may be found at the end of this release. All performers should be comfortable with comedy, including some light improvisation, and must be strong singers capable of handling complex harmony.
ABOUT THE ROLES
Please note that the age(s) listed for each role below are the approximate age of the characters, not of the actors expected to play them. All roles (including the six principal children) will be played by actors of age 18 or older.
Rona Lisa Peretti (female [mid-30s], mezzo-soprano with medium belt): The moderator (and former winner) of the Bee, Miss Peretti has nearly boundless enthusiasm for everything to do with the event. She loves children and is compassionate toward the individual spellers, but she takes the proceedings very seriously all the same. Also plays Olive Ostrovsky’s mother. Need an exceptional singer with a big personality.
Vice Principal Douglas Panch (male [late 30s to late 40s], non-singing role): After five years absence due to a previous “incident,” Vice Principal Panch returns to the bee as word reader and judge “in a better place now.” He’s a bit high strung, and not entirely thrilled to be back at the Bee, but he nonetheless takes the whole thing about as seriously as Miss Peretti in his own way. Panch is responsible for moderating most of the interaction with the spellers and with the audience volunteers who will participate in the show; as such, he must be funny, understated, and extremely comfortable with on-the-fly improvisation.
Mitch Mahoney (male [mid 20s to late 30s], tenor): Mitch is an ex-convict performing parole-mandated community service as the “Comfort Counselor” for the Bee, handing out juice boxes and wisdom to spellers who are eliminated. He has a sense of perspective somewhat missing from the other participants in the event, and turns out to be a much better comfort counselor than he’d have expected himself to be. Also plays Olive Ostrovsky’s father and one of Logainne’s fathers. Must be a very strong singer and comfortable with vocal improvisation.
Olive Ostrovsky (female, mezzo soprano with belt): Shy, gentle, and reserved, Olive has been mostly ignored by her mother and father and counts her dictionary as her closest friend. Her participation in the Bee allows her to emerge from her protective shell both socially and competitively. Also plays one of Leaf’s siblings. Need an excellent singer with a light medium belt.
William Barfée (male, baritone): Born with only one working nostril, William has learned to turn social dysfunction into an art form. He is haughty, temperamental, easily hurt, and generally mean. He is also a brilliant speller and, in the final analysis, a pretty good guy. Also plays Leaf’s father. Must have a very forceful personality and be able to be likable while being singularly unlikeable.
Marcy Park (female, belter): Successful at everything she does, Marcy is a champion martial artist, piano player, dancer, singer, field hockey player, and, of course, speller. She has a reputation for being cold and joyless, a reputation she perhaps has earned but does not want or deserve. Marcy is not allowed to cry. Also plays one of Leaf’s siblings.
Leaf Coneybear (male, tenor): One of seven children born to a pair of hippies, Leaf appears to be vacant and not terribly bright. In reality, he is very smart and also very easily distracted. Every new second is a wonderful discovery for Leaf. His mother makes him wear a protective helmet to the Bee, just in case; this probably sums up everything you need to know about Leaf. Also plays the other of Logainne’s fathers.
Logainne Schwartzandgrubienniere (female, belter): The youngest and most driven of the spellers, Logainne has a cataclysmic lisp and is a compulsive over-sharer. She is bizarrely political, has carefully researched her opponents, and is probably about three weeks from a massive nervous breakdown. She is also extremely charismatic, able to command attention. Also plays Leaf’s mother. Must be comfortable with extemporaneous speaking.
Chip Tolentino (male, tenor): Clean-cut, All-American, Boy Scout, last year’s winner and this year’s presumptive favorite. Unfortunately for him, just noticed girls.
